Default What did they say?

Whatever happened to people saying what they mean? Todays songs have so many double meanings that I am sometimes afraid to let my kids sing something before I make sure it's nothing sexual. I remember a day when Lollipop actually meant a piece of candy on a stick. Don't get me wrong, I like some of the songs, but if you really do not listen to the words and their context before letting your kids sing them, it could be a problem. LOL

Default Milkshake

I know what you mean, such as:

"My milkshake brings all the boys to the yard..."

What's the "milkshake" being referred to here?

It's always been that way, though. Check out these examples:

"Those were the best days of my life
The summer of 69"
(from "The Summer of 69" by Bryan Adams. Adams has been quoted as saying that 69 did not refer to a year)

"When I feel your finger on my trigger
Happiness is a warm gun"
(from "Happiness is a Warm Gun" by the Beatles)

"I'll give you some head
And shoulders to cry on."
(from "Call Me" by Blondie)

"You got the peaches, I got the cream"
(from "Pour Some Sugar on Me" by Def Leppard)

"Grass is good as carpet
Anyplace is fine
Its time to get to rockin'
Babe it's time to make it shine"
(from "The Horizontal Bop" by Bob Seger)

"She wore a pearl necklace"
(from "Pearl Necklace" by ZZ Top)

"She do the boogie. She do the Tube Snake Boogie."
(from "Tube Snake Boogie" by ZZ Top)

Yep. That's certainly one of the more glaring examples in recent memory.

"London Bridge" by Fergie is also full of such references and double entendres.

LOL I loved the tune to London Bridge and Smack That, but cannot listen to it with my kids around. Some of those other lyrics I never thought twice about until now. Guess I was naive back then, lol.

Aha !

I have the "milkshake" answer.

I worked for a pretty awesome little indie radio station in college, and learned some stuff -- the origin of this song being one of them.

The guy who wrote the original "Milkshake" song was a club DJ -- the lyrics said "My deep-throat brings all the boys to the yard". Obviously, when someone decided to turn his track into a pop hit, they had to change the oral sex reference.

Kooky, but true.

So in the next Watergate-style Washington scandal, we might have an anonymous source who refers to himself as "Milkshake"?

That would be awesome.

I'm sure the DJ who created the song would immediately be carried away for a waterboarding session (at least if it happens in the next few days).
