A lefty pitcher for eight MLB teams, including the 1979 champion Pitsburgh Pirates, Dave Roberts died today of lung cancer at the age of 64.
The cancer was believed to have been caused by exposure to asbestos. As a younger man, Roberts worked as a boilermaker in the offseason, and he was frequently exposed to the cancer-causing material.
For his career, Roberts was 103-125 with a 3.78 ERA. He played for the Padres, Mets, Pirates, Giants, Astros, Tigers, Cubs and Mariners.
